MCBA Book Club meeting

The MCBA book club met today for the first time, with five students attending. We had a great discussion about the themes in Isla to Island, as well as took a close look at the illustrations and how they contributed to the storytelling. We all agreed it is a great story!

Join us next Thursday at recess when we will be discussing A Wolf Called Wander.

Happy Summer Reading!

We are officially on summer break!
In addition to all the fun things you have planned, be sure to include some good reading time. A minimum goal is 20 minutes a day, but this is summer! Really let yourself fall into that book. Beach reading, front porch reading, rainy day on the couch reading, in a tree reading, road trip reading (audiobooks! Don't get car sick!) are the best. Take a few notes so you will be ready with all the details for Battle of the Books. And don't forget to check out the great MCBA collection waiting for you in Sora!

The new list has arrived

I love that our readers barely finish the flurry of MCBA activities and voting and then clamor for the new list! It has arrived and it looks terrific!

This year's list contains five graphic novels, the most ever, and a range of genres. The list features books that range from a third grade to seventh grade reading level to accommodate a range of learners.

It features rich stories, some that tackle tough topics. The list offers stories with both mirrors and windows, and perhaps sliding glass doors. Every book on the list may not be right for you, but this voluntary program is all about choice. Choose the books you want to read! And if you ever have questions, want to talk about the stories, or process what you read, know that you have a whole squad of teachers who are reading these stories too and we are here for you.

This year MCBA is also launching a new logo! What do you think?

The Winner(s)...

Our MCBA voting ended in an unprecedented 4-way tie! That speaks to how much students enjoyed so many of this year's nominated books! Our voting results have been forwarded to Salem State University to be added to the state totals. The state winner will be announced next month.

Stories in Action

On Thursday, February 24 Stories in Action took place in the library. It was an afternoon packed with activities themed around the MCBA nominees:

  • Boxing lessons in Muhammad Ali's Gym
  • MCBA Mini-Games
  • Cici's Supertaster test
  • Clean Getaway
  • Two Truths and a Lie
  • MCBA Maker Space
  • Voting for our favorite book
Only readers who had read five or more nominees received an invitation. We had 38 students attend!
It was a blast.

A special thank you to all of the teachers and parents who volunteered to make the afternoon a success!

Students vs. Teachers/Parents

The Fourth-grade team, our school champions, took on the "Wildcards" on Friday in a game live-streamed into the classrooms.
They were victorious!
Congratulations!

Battle of the Books 2022

This year's Battle of the Books tournament was exciting from beginning to end!

Beginning on February 21 and running through March 4 we held the grade level tournament, the school championship, the teacher/parent tournament, and a just-for-fun student champ vs. adult champ game.

The knowledge of book details on display was incredible! Intense action through each round, with several going into an overtime situation.

We had 40 participants in this year's tournament. Congratulations to all of our readers!
